Contemporary Art Displays As A Feature In The Home

By Karen Fisher

Art is a subjective matter, with each person's view being different. When putting art into a house, it personalizes the space and makes it individual and unique. Just because the contemporary art displays in a public gallery look fabulous, does not mean it will work in your own living room and for your family.

A warm touch is to use photographs that have been passed down through generations in your own family. Even if you have photos that are water damaged, or torn, there are likely to be several people that can offer the service to repair and touch up your precious photographs. The pictures can be reprinted after repair to make them look new.

Depending on your room decor and how formal the area is, you could select several options. For a more casual room, such as a family room, use the largest wall in the room to start planning your art focal point. Once the pictures are up on the wall, they should complement the room and be a talking point.

One way to set up the installation, is to find photo frames that do not necessarily match in size and shape or color and start collecting them. Look at thrift shops and garage sales as well as your local home supply company. The result will be a mismatched, eclectic visual, with the focus being on the layout and the pictures within.

Working with frames that are of a variety of shapes and sizes means that a fair amount of planning is required. Start by editing your digital pictures and finding a common theme or color or changing them to all be black and white. Once the pictures all follow a theme and they are in their frames, set them out on the floor into the shape you have chosen. You may find that you have to move them around several times before they are ready to hang but it is worth the effort.

Should you have decided to match your frames and keep them identical, you will still need to work on the layout but it should be simpler. Stick to a simpler frame, such as one without embellishments and in a neutral black or white, that doesn't detract from the picture. Set them out in a more rigid pattern keeping to straight rows in a square or rectangle.

If you are wanting to use a particular theme for your photographs, avoid filling a wall with photos from a specific event. Rather select your favorite pictures from that family get together or your cousin's graduation and use those. You may like to use a theme of purely nature pictures all taken on various hiking trips or family vacations. The collection will expand and grow over time.

The pleasing visual of having personal pictures and memories displayed in your home is also very personal and unique to a family. They will look attractive as well as adding the finishing embellishment to a room that is integral to the home.
