Norway Flag And Its History

By Benn Stuart

Officially adopted on the 17th of July, 1821, the flag of Norway is considered to be one of the many flags all over the world that has a rich history. It was designed by Fredrik Meltzer, a parliament member. Originally, the national flag of Norway was described as one that has a golden lion with a crown and an axe on the red background. However, this flag gradually phased out on the 17th and 18th centuries. The original flag is the one presently used as the Royal Standard.

After 1442, Norway was ruled by Danish kings until 1814, when it was united with Sweden-although retaining a degree of independence and receiving a new constitution in an uneasy partnership. The flag of Norway design was proposed by Fredrik Meltzer, shown with other proposals on May 4, 1821. The king approved the design for civilian use on July 13, 1821.

The Norwegian flag was first adopted on July 17, 1821, and is based on the Danish flag, with a blue cross placed within the white cross of the Danish flag. Norway was ruled by Denmark from the mid-15th century until 1814 when it joined a union with Sweden until 1905.

The Norwegian flag had an emblem representing the Norway-Sweden union from 1844 until 1898 when the government re-introduced the Norwegian flag, minus the Union symbol. A 1905 Norwegian referendum voted overwhelmingly to end the country's union with Sweden. The flag of Norway has a red background with a blue 'Scandinavian cross' on it. The Scandinavian cross is outlined by white stripes. The vertical stripe of the cross isn't centered; instead, it's based on the left side of the flag.

The dark blue color of the Norwegian flag is designed as a cross and bordered in white. The dark blue cross, which is known to be the cross of Sweden, and its white borders are then designed with a bright red background.

The Norwegian national flag is red, with a navy blue cross, off-center slightly toward the hoist side. The blue cross, which stretches from top to bottom and left to right across the flag, is outlined with a white border. These colors may represent freedom, drawing from the flags of France, the Netherlands, the USA, and the UK. The red and blue also reflect the shared history with Denmark and Sweden.
