Kuwait Flag And Its History

By Bill Clown

The development of the nation of Kuwait dates to the early 18th cent. when the town of Kuwait was founded by Arabs. The present ruling dynasty was established by Sabah Abu Abdullah (ruled 1756â€"72). In the late 18th and early 19th cent. the emirate, nominally an Ottoman province, was frequently threatened by the Wahhabis. In 1897, Kuwait was made a British protectorate.

In 1871, Kuwait became a province of the Ottoman Empire, Basra County. In 1899, the British signed a secret agreement, forcing Kuwait to become a "sovereign state." In 1939, Kuwait officially becomes a British "protectorate." In 1954, chief Abdullah Sabah headed the Supreme Council. In 1960, the council took over from the British judicial system and monetary management. On June 19, 1961, Kuwait declared independence.

The current flag of Kuwait was adopted on 7 September 1961 when they gained independence from Britain. It was first hoisted on 24 November 1961. The flag was a red triangle with its base on the hoist (left the side of the flag. It had three horizontal stripes of equal sizes of black, green and white.

The banner of Kuwait comprises of three even stripes - the top stripe is green; the center one white; and the base stripe is red. On the left-hand side of the Kuwait banner, there is a dark trapezoid.

Red, white, black and green are referred to as pan-Arab colors and have been linked to the Arab people and Islamic faith for centuries. The colors on the Kuwait flag represent Arab unity and independence and are used in the flags of many countries in the region. The green stripe represents the fertility of Arab nations and the black represents the defeat of enemies. The red stands for the blood of the defeated enemy and white symbolize honor and purity.

Another set of meanings is that white signifies honor, red is for gallantry, bravery, strength, and valor, green represents fertile fields, hope, joy, love and in many cultures green has a sacred meaning, and black is for the defeat of enemies or determination.
