Guidelines Pertaining To Plastic Surgery Dayton OH Patients Need To Know

By Lelia Hall

Cosmetic surgery offers new hope for many people who are dissatisfied with an aspect of their appearance through surgical and non-surgical procedures which alter the look of the targeted features. Before choosing to undergo plastic surgery Dayton OH residents must ensure that they have a competent surgeon, understand all the risks, and that their expectations are realistic.

Sometimes a person is born with a birth defect or sustains an injury which results in the disfigurement of part of the body. In other cases, one may simply be unhappy with the size or shape of one of their features or an area of the body. The former is termed "reconstructive" and the latter "elective" surgery.

Surgical procedures are more complex, and require the patient to be given a general anesthetic; some common types include liposuction, facelift, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty (nose job), and breast augmentation. Less invasive, non-surgical procedures such as laser skin resurfacing, Botox and filler injections, and sclerotherapy, are usually done in the doctor's office with either a local anesthetic or none at all.

Finding the right plastic surgeon should be anyone's top priority if they are considering one of these procedures. A good candidate will have a minimum of five years surgical and at least two in plastic surgery, which encompasses all types of surgical procedures. He or she must adhere to a strict code of ethics, and operate only in accredited facilities. Furthermore, the surgeon must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

In addition to having a proven track record of competence and satisfied patients, the surgeon must also be forthcoming and open to fully discussing the procedure and any possible risks it may entail with the patient. Many types of plastic surgery involve ongoing, follow-up care so it's important that the patient feel comfortable sharing any concerns which may arise with the surgeon and have questions answered satisfactorily.

Basically surgery of any kind comes with the risk of complications, which also depend on the nature of the operation and the health of the person undergoing the procedure. If a patient suffers from a condition such as high blood pressure of heart disease, this risk is increased, but if it is deemed to dangerous, the surgeon will not operate. Healthy people should not worry about this; all possible complications will be clearly explained to them beforehand and they will need to sign a consent form which acknowledges their awareness of this fact.

Unless the surgery is being done to correct a medical condition, it is unlikely that insurance will cover the cost, which depending on the procedure, can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Some surgical clinics may offer financing to their patients, and there are also some private lenders who specialize in issuing loans for this purpose to qualified applicants.

If people choose to live a healthy lifestyle by eating right, drinking enough water, getting adequate amounts of sleep and exercise, and not using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs habitually, they may not need plastic surgery until they are considerably old. Although this is overall a very effective approach to improving one's appearance, it's still advisable to keep one's expectations realistic, since there is always a small possibility that the results may need "tweaking" down the road if they are not quite what one had in mind.
