More Classic TV Sitcoms Around The World

By Ida Dorsey

Nowadays there are so many shows on television which display too much sex and violence. Luckily people can still catch classic tv sitcoms whenever they tune into a station called Atenna TV. Fortunately PBS in America also runs many great old programs on Saturday night. Americans can all thank England for "Are You Being Served?" and other great hits.

One particular character named Mrs. Slocombe was a real hit on "Are You Being Served?" She would do very unique things each and every week and people loved to look at her. She was not an attractive woman but was quite interesting to view. Her hair was painted a different shade every time this program came over the airwaves. Unfortunately many of the stars on this particular series have all passed away and no other actors could ever take their places.

"Keeping Up Appearances" proved to be successful with the upper and lower class families around England. Everyone loved to hate the dreadful Hyacinth Bucket. Even though Hyacinth was middle class she was a horrible person who tried to live an extravagant lifestyle. Over the weekends this lady would invite all of her neighbors to a candle light supper. Many of the residents refused to attend her social events. Mrs. Bucket had three sisters on this particular series and they did not like her behavior.

CBS was very lucky to put on a show called "The Beverly Hillbillies" during the 1960's. Granny was a little old lady who enjoyed making moonshine and fighting with the banker's wife. Ellie Mae was a character straight out of Li'l Abner and she was indeed a blonde bombshell.

Every person alive felt sorry for the big dumb man called Jethro. Mr. Jethro Bodine only had a fifth grade education even though he was over eighteen. His uncle Jed was now a millionaire who could buy Jethro any item on Earth that he desired. CBS also created a program which featured three females and four males who were stranded.

For three long years people had the pleasure of watching "Gilligan's Island." The show's creator was a talented man who also invented a program called "The Brady Bunch." The individuals living on this island could never truly be rescued since that would ruin the show. Ginger spent most of her time chasing after the handsome professor who lived on this deserted place.

Alice Kramden was the fictional wife of Ralph on one series titled "The Honeymooners." Alice would often speak her mind to Ralph and he would tolerate this behavior. Sometimes the two of them would have horrible fights that would more than likely end any marriage.

During the 1960's there was also a family of five living in New York City. They were all on a program called "Family Affair." The major player on this series was a man named Bill and he shared an apartment with Sissy, Jody, Buffy and Mr. French. At times Mr. French seemed a bit jealous of the children since he wanted to live a childless life. As the series went on this great man from England became a second father figure to the three small tykes.
