Women who are not satisfied with the size or shape of their breasts often choose to undergo breast augmentation. A cosmetic surgeon surgically inserts implants under the skin to enlarge the bust and improve its contours. Before getting breast implants Richmond Hill Ontario and Barrie, Ontario patients should discuss it with their doctor and learn what to expect from it.

At the initial consultation the cosmetic surgeon will take a detailed medical history of the patient to make sure she is a suitable candidate for the surgery. The doctor will explain how the procedure is done and make recommendations for the best size and type of implants for the patient based on her body shape and weight.

Most implants today are filled with either saline or silicone. Both varieties are comprised of a hollow shell that contains a filler. The shape, thickness, and texture of the forms can vary and they may be pre-filled, or this can also be done once they are surgically inserted into the body, after which a patch will be applied to seal them. Some types are designed in a way which makes it possible to adjust the amount of filler up to six months after surgery.

The early forerunners to today's safe silicone implant designs were withdrawn from the market in the early 1990's due to faults which posed a health risk. However, manufacturers redesigned these forms to provide patients with a natural-looking implant that did not carry the dangers associated with those in the past. The gel filler inside them creates a realistic appearance and feel which makes them a popular choice.

Saline is another popular type of implant. The forms contain a saline solution which some people prefer because it is less potentially harmful than silicone if a leak develops. Available in many styles, shapes, and sizes, these forms can be placed either beneath the tissue of the breast or the muscle layer to create a slightly different look.

Patients will undergo augmentation surgery under a general anesthetic in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility. The surgical technique used dictates the location of the scars, and in some cases the patient can choose how this will be done. Common incision sites include around the nipple, alongside the outer edges of the breasts, the armpit, and in some cases, through the navel.

The type of implants being inserted plays a big part in determining the type of surgical technique that will be implemented. Due to their smaller pre-insertion size, inflatable designs offer a wider choice of incision sites and they will also require a smaller cut to be made, leading to less scarring. Pre-filled styles are bigger, requiring a larger incision and fewer insertion options.

It is usually safe for patients to go home several hours after the surgery, but they must adhere closely to the post-operative care instructions provided by the surgeon to recover uneventfully. Complications are unlikely but do exist, namely difficulty breast-feeding, reduced sensitivity of the nipples and breasts, rupture, and infection. The patient will also have to get implants replaced about every ten years.
